Flood prep closes Hwy 97

UPDATE: 5:25 p.m.

Crews are working to manage flooding north of Oliver, in the Sportsmens Bowl area.

Twelve properties remain under evacuation, as several dams above the homes remain at critical levels.

Over 300 meters of rock gabion wire baskets is being installed near the lower end of Sportsmens Bowl Road to direct water through the culverts under Highway 97.

Additionally, bladder dams, also known as tiger dams, and sandbags are being deployed on parts of Highway 97, Jones Road and the upper end of Sportsmens Bowl Road.

"Residents are asked not to walk or stand on tiger dams or sandbags, and to stay out of the flowing water as the ground below may be unstable and away from emergency crews and hazard areas to allow crews to work safely," Peter Weeber, RDOS emergency operations centre director said in a release.

ORIGINAL: 12 p.m.

Highway 97 is closed in both directions 10 kilometres north of Oliver due to construction taking place.

The roadway will be closed between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. both Tuesday and Wednesday, according to DriveBC.

A detour is available for motorists at Park Rill Road heading north and at Island Way Road heading south.

The area of the road closure encompasses the Park Rill Creek watershed at Sportsmens Bowl Road, which has likely been the area hardest hit by floodwaters in the Okanagan so far this spring.

Castanet has reached out to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for further details.
