Pushing for 'Fair Vote'

The Fair Vote South Okanagan Similkameen group raised awareness about proportional representation in elections this weekend at the Spring Market in Penticton as part of a province-wide initiative.

They are one of 30 such non-partisan teams across B.C., which worked together on a "Day of Action" aimed at eliminating the existing first-past-the-post voting system, which the group calls outdated.

"[It] discards half our votes," said local Fair Vote chairperson Diana McGregor. "What we are hearing is that folks want an improved system in which all our votes are valued, and the legislature reflects how we all voted proportionally. Then we'll get better governance from MLAs who listen both to us and to each other.”

Volunteers spent their weekend speaking to as many of the 1800 visitors to the market at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre that they could.

They say it was in anticipation of an upcoming referendum on electoral reform, for which the date is expected to be released by the end of April by the B.C. Attorney General's office.
