Caught in a bait car

Two thieves were arrested in Surrey last week after a successful bait car operation.

On April 16, a bait car was activated in the north end of the city. Two males were observed inside the vehicle both driving and unloading items from the back.

Surrey RCMP officers from the Auto Crime Target Team and some on general duty arrested the men and took them into custody.

Joel Falk, 29, and Bryan Christopher Becker, 42, both of Surrey, have been charged with one count each of theft of motor vehicle and possession of a break-in instrument. Falk has also been charged with a count of mischief over $5,000.

“Thanks to the efforts of programs like the bait car, and other proactive enforcement and preventative measures, auto crime is on the decline in Surrey,” said Cpl. Elenore Sturko. “Together with the combined efforts of our specialized teams, analysts and multi-jurisdictional partners we can identify, track and arrest prolific auto thieves that much quicker and efficiently in our community.”

In addition to the bait car program, so far this year, 17 stolen vehicles have been recovered in Surrey with the help of the Surrey RCMP's Stolen Auto Recovery program's volunteers.

Two volunteers were instrumental just this month in spotting and reporting a stolen car to RCMP.

Surrey RCMP are observing Auto Crime Enforcement Month this month, reminding the public to be vigilant about their vehicles and possessions within them. The public is also encouraged to report all incidents of auto crime and suspicious activity.
