'Penticton' sign updated

The iconic sign on Penticton’s Munson Mountain got an upgrade Sunday from the local Smart Cities Challenge group.

With the grant application deadline looming on Tuesday, lead volunteer Keith MacIntyre said they used burlap sacks and white painters cloths to change the sign to “Penticten” for about 30 minutes.

“Community engagement is a huge part of the process,” MacIntyre said. “With the giant blue number ten being with 2,000 people over the last month and a half, the ten has kind of become a symbol of our Smart Cities Challenge bid.”

The Smart Cities Challenge is an Infrastructure Canada program that has Penticton competing with other mid-sized cities for $10M to improve the community.

The local volunteer-run group campaign is building its application around a healthier Penticton. The ten, represents ten big projects to achieve that goal.

The change to the Penticton sign attracted significant attention on the local Facebook group.

“It was hard to tell from up there how it looked from across the lake, so it was really neat that it was noticeable and that it got picked up on the Penticton page," he said.

MacIntyre says their full application will be made public online once their submission is made.
