Rise in theft from vehicles

Police in Oliver have put out a warning to residents about a rise in thefts from vehicles.

Sgt. Blaine Gervais said two suspects, a male and female, are believed to be the primary perpetrators, and he said many thefts are a result of vehicles being left unlocked with possessions sitting in plain sight.

"These suspects are not committing sophisticated crimes, they are simply trying to open door handles on vehicles and once they discover it is unlocked they take whatever they can carry," Gervais said.

"Unfortunately they have successfully stolen items of considerable value."

Gervais affirmed that residents need to lock their doors when leaving their vehicle for any amount of time.

"Suspects continue to steal from unlocked vehicles only because it is of low risk of being caught and it is a fruitful source of income."

Residents are also asked to mark their belongings with something distinguishable, and to record any serial numbers on items.
