Shocking violence stats

Every six days in Canada, a woman is killed by her intimate partner.

The Kelowna Women’s Shelter is reminding the public of that shocking statistic during Prevention of Violence Against Women Week (April 15 to 21).

The Shelter produced a video with Global TV that challenges men to take a greater leadership role in ending the violence and abuse.

Showing various intimidating moments, it ends with the message: boys who are taught to respect girls will become men who respect women.

The 30-second PSA features all local acting talent and is being distributed to women’s shelters across the country.

“Every six days in Canada, a woman is killed by her intimate partner, and every night, more than 6,200 women and their children seek refuge from abuse in shelters like ours,” says shelter executive director Karen Mason. “These statistics are absolutely unacceptable, and they represent real women and children who deserve to live free of violence and abuse.”

The shelter is in its 38th year of serving the Central Okanagan.
