1000s of sandbags filled

They have been at work all weekend filling sandbags at Fire Hall 202, and won't be stopping anytime soon.

"We're trying to get a significant inventory of sandbags, because last year I think we used over 200,000," said Deputy Fire Chief Chris Forster. "Last year we were making them and using them as fast as we were making them, so we're definitely trying to get prepared."

They have made approximately 12,000 so far this year, with 11,000 still on hand. The rest were picked up by members of the public, who have access to the bags as needed, and on Sunday the RDOS took some down to Willowbrook, where flooding has already been heavy.

Forster said the preparations will continue through the week, as the department hopes to build up an inventory of between 30,000 and 50,000 filled bags.
