Cops save distraught woman

Police jumped into action to save a distraught woman from a dangerous situation on Wednesday.

Just before 10 p.m., New Hazelton RCMP received a report of a person standing in the middle of the road, not moving or attempting to avoid traffic.

They found the woman had climbed underneath a bridge to a small construction walkway. She threatened to jump if police tried to approach her.

A crisis negotiator was called, and as officers spoke calmly to the woman, she collapsed over a single wire at the edge of the walkway.

Two officers slid down a support cable to the unresponsive woman, while others assisted from the bridge.

"The woman was in obvious distress and the quick action likely saved her life," said Staff Sgt. Steve Vince. "They placed themselves at considerable risk to prevent injury or even death."

Firefighters helped get everyone back topside, and the woman was taken to hospital for medical assessment.
