Calling all heroes

Calling all heroes: now is your chance to shine.

The third annual Heroes Amazing Race takes place May 26, but registration is open April 1.

Organizer Lindsay James said the race is not a cut-throat competition, but a fun challenge for people aged 12-65.

The race is the only one of its kind in the Valley and all of the money raised will go toward the local cancer treatment centre.

Raising money for cancer is a cause close to James' heart after losing a close friend to the disease.

She and her best friend, Melissa Gobbett, started Heroes Shave it Off after Gobbett, a wife and mother of two small boys, was diagnosed with brain cancer.

“Melissa fought bravely for three years,” said James. “She lost her battle, but her legacy lives on through this fundraiser. This year, profits from the race will be donated to The Cancer Clinic Comfort Fund at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. The comfort fund is designated by the doctors and counselors at Cancer Clinic to patients expressing a need for financial support while dealing with cancer.”

James said teams of two will race around around the city, with each leg requiring teams to deduce clues, navigate through foreign areas, interact with locals, perform physical and mental challenges.

Also in the mix will be sponsored cars, buses, taxis and other public transportation options that will help racers arrive at their destination even faster – if they are fortunate enough to nab one,

But beware, there will be cases of sabotage for racers, just to make things a little more interesting.

“People tell me they do it for the experience. When you do it, you are not racing each other as much as you are challenging yourself,” said James.

The race can take up to five hours, and can be a challenge to complete, but it is also a lot of fun.

“It is really fun, but it is hard,” she said.

One of the checkpoints last year featured a 1,200-square-foot bouncy castle that participants had to navigate – while wearing 'drunk goggles' of course.

There is no word on what challenges await participants this as it is a closely guarded secret.

“The challenges are different every year,” said James. “It's lots of fun for the whole family.”

Tickets are $45 per person - $90 per team - or waive the ticket fee by raising $250 or more as a team. There will be prizes for the most money raised.

First place will win a houseboat trip for 22 people from Waterway Houseboats.
