Shephard gets games call

Kelowna basketball star Grant Shephard will be off to Australia later this month.

Shephard, who led the KSS Owls to the first AAAA boys basketball title in school history in 2016, has been named to Canada's men's basketball team competing at the Commonwealth Games.

The 6'10" forward is one of 12 players named to the squad.

Shephard played this past season with the UBC Thunderbirds, earning Canada West rookie of the year honours.

He averaged 8.7 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, while appearing in all 31 games during his rookie season.

Prior to the start of the season, Shephard was also part of the Canadian team which that shocked the world, capturing the gold medal in the World U19 championship.

It was the first-ever gold medal for Canada at a FIBA international tournament.

The Commonwealth Games will take place April 4 to 15 in Gold Coast, Australia. Canada opens the basketball tournament April 6 against the host Australians.
