Straw-free for environment

In a push to inspire Penticton to be more environmentally-friendly, the Barley Mill Pub will no longer be using straws.

Kori Wyburn, marketing and events manager for the pub, was inspired on a family vacation to Tofino, B.C. in the fall. Tofino is almost entirely straw-free, and on their way to a plastic-free goal.

"Being a tourist destination as well, I thought it would be really neat if everyone else in Penticton came on board," Wyburn said. "And then perhaps, with all these visiting guests and stuff, they might be inspired to bring that back home with them, just like I was."

Wyburn posted in a popular Penticton community Facebook on Monday, advertising the pub's decision, and the post started immediately gaining traction through likes and comments. She was pleased to say many of the comments were positive and encouraging.

Comments included Facebook users saying "way to go," and promising to stop by soon. Not everyone seems thrilled, but that doesn't bother Wyburn.

"No matter what, there will be some negative buzz, but on day one we had only three people all day yesterday ask for straws," Wyburn said. "Nobody uses straws at home, why do they need to do it at establishments?"

The bar will still offer straws for their margaritas, but they will be purchasing biodegradable straws as well as upgrading their takeout containers to biodegradable material.

It's a more expensive option, but Wyburn said saving on costs was never the point.

"It's going to be okay. People old and young are on board, and it's important to remember that one person can make a difference," Wyburn said. "We need to be leaders."

Other Penticton establishments that have previously taken the step are the Cannery and White Spot.
