Biking towards the future

The North Okanagan Cycling Society is hoping for a big 2018.

The group held its annual general meeting recently where president Daniel Poulin spoke about where they were and where the group is headed.

“2017 was a big project year for us, with some projects coming to fruition like the expanded Trail Ninjas Program, as well as some projects building toward completion in 2018," Paulin said.

"It is exciting to see the programs, amenities, and trails grow at such a rapid rate, and we are looking forward to seeing what we can get done next year.”

In 2017, NOCS membership grew to more than 700 members. It was also able to secure roughly $100,000 in successful grant applications. Its members also put in more than 2,500 volunteer hours in 2017.

The group is excited to bring a few new projects online for 2018, including completion of the bike skills park at Becker Park, a regional high school mountain biking circuit and the installation of new signage and trails throughout Kalamalka Lake and Ellison Provincial Parks — made possible by a $16,000 grant from Tourism Vernon.

Director Nick Macdonald says the new bike skills park will feature pump tracks and trails for all abilities and will act as a staging area for a youth skills program, Sprockids, which is run by Olympia Cycle & Ski as well as Trail Ninjas, a riding and trail building program for teens.

“We are thrilled to see the bike skills park go from concept to reality,” said Nick Macdonald, NOCS Director. “It has been a pleasure to work with the City of Vernon to achieve our goal of providing this valuable amenity to our community.”

On May 3 to 6, NOCS will also be hosting the 2nd annual Vernon Bike Fest.

“This is a fun way to start the season and embrace our local mountain biking culture,” says Dudley Coulter, Community Relations with NOCS. “There will be a film festival, demo day, group ride, an 80’s themed bike party and more.”
