House fire was an arson

Fire investigators have confirmed last week’s fire at a home on Rutland's Argyll Road was an arson.

Emergency crews responded to the blaze on Feb. 15 just before 9 a.m.

“The homeowner, who was home alone at the time, was unharmed thanks to the quick actions of her neighbours,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey of the Kelowna RCMP.

Police have learned that a resident rushed back to his home to retrieve a fire extinguisher after he spotted the fire. Despite his efforts, when he returned, the fire had grown significantly and spread.

The man then helped a second good samaritan, who alerted the home owner inside and evacuated her from her home.

The Kelowna RCMP General Investigations Section has now taken lead on the ongoing investigation.

Police are seeking the public’s assistance to help identify the second good samaritan who helped the homeowner to safety.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Const. Kevin Hamilton of the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
