Warriors squander 2 points

The West Kelowna Warriors appeared to have two points secured in the back pocket.

Then they played the third period.

The Warriors squandered a 4-2 second period lead, then needed a late rally to force overtime before falling 7-6 to the visiting Wenatchee Wild to close out the home portion of the regular season.

"To give up five goals was unfortunate. I don't know what to tell you. We do stuff OK for 40 minutes, then we want to do stuff not OK for the last 20 and be on our own page," said Warriors head coach Rylan Ferster.

"That's what happens. That's a good hockey team over there. You don't want to do things the right way and that's what happens."

Wenatchee took advantage in the third, scoring four unanswered goals to take a two goal lead. But, a late flurry by the Warriors...two goals in 25 seconds with Nik Amundrud on the bench for an extra attacker, tied it and forced overtime.

West Kelowna had a chance to win it with an overtime power play, but were unable to generate much in the offensive end.

With 61 seconds left in the first overtime period, Matt Dorsey found himself all alone in front of Amundrud. He deked to the forehand and slid the puck home for the game winner.

The Warriors big line of Parm Dhaliwal, Ryan Steele and Chase Dubois did most of the damage for the Warriors.

Steele scored twice and added three assists. Dhaliwal scored a pair, including the 6-5 goal on a rebound from the top of the crease, while Dubois added four assists.

Jared Marino and Michael Ryan with the game tying goal at 18:40, also scored for the Warriors.

The Warriors led 1-0 after one and were tied 2-2 late in the second when Steele on a breakaway and Marino with a wrist shot from the slot on a power play gave the Warriors an emotional two-goal lead after 40.

But, it was special teams that turned the tide in the third.

A pair of power play goals sandwiched around a shorthanded goal gave Wenatchee their first lead of the game. A fourth straight from AJ Vanderbeck increased the lead to two before the Warriors battled back to force an extra period.

The Wild were a perfect 3-3 on the power play, while the Warriors scored twice on their five opportunities.

The single point moves the Warriors five points up on Merritt and seven ahead of Salmon Arm as the three teams continue to fight for fifth, sixth and seven in the Interior Division.

The Warriors have two games remaining, in Merritt Friday and Salmon Arm Saturday. The Centennials have three to play and the Silverbacks, who will end the season with five games in five nights, have four games remaining.
