Weather grounds flights

Poor visibility is causing problems at the Kelowna International Airport Saturday, forcing the cancellation of several flights.

While some early-morning departures made it out of Kelowna, the first flight was cancelled at about 9 a.m.

As of 1:30 p.m., eight arrivals and eight departures have been cancelled at YLW, and many others have been delayed.

“The runway's fine, the crews have been out there sweeping and clearing snow all day, but the visibiltiy is what's been going up and down and causing the biggest challenges," said James Hall, operations manager of YLW.

In addition to the poor visibility, wind is adding to the issues.

“With a bit of wind coming from the north, they've been landing from the south," Hall said. "We don't have the same instrument landing system (from the south), so with that, their visibility requirements go up a bit.

"When the snow's flying thick, the visibility goes down pretty quick."

Hall says the wind has been fluctuating all day, and flights may be sporadically cancelled into the evening.

"We're hoping we can start getting some consistent arrivals," Hall said.

The status of YLW arrivals and departures can be found at the airport's website.
