What is causing a stink in Lumby?

The village of Lumby granted a permit for an industrial property to burn some waste. That waste is now causing a toxic smell to permeate the community.

One reader told Castanet that the smell was "terrible and toxic."  And "it has been burning for two days and it is creating a health problem."

Lumby bylaw officer Lee Elliot says he received his first complaint Monday morning that the fire was burning, causing a terrible stench. 

He says they are in the process of putting the fire out.

"We have taken some action and it is being put out as we speak."

Part of the permissions in the permit granted was there had to be good venting. 

Elliot could not say, as it is not his level of expertise, but the cloud cover which has rolled in may be playing a factor.
