Tragic father, daughter trip

A father and his 15-year-old daughter have been tragically killed after a weekend ATV outing in Campbell River.

The dad, daughter and another teen were out for a ride on Sunday when they attempted to cross Woods Creek and were swept away by fast-moving waters.

A source close to the family has told Castanet the father, 51, and his daughter are originally from Kelowna.

RCMP told CTV Vancouver Island the three were Campbell River residents.

One female was pulled from the water after residents heard screams from Woods Creek on Sunday. A passerby who was walking his dog is believed to have spotted the girl.

“The Canadian Coast Guard did manage to recover two of the three people from the water,” said Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre spokeswoman Lt. Melissa Kai.

The second teen was found late Sunday just before the search was called off for the night due to darkness.

Woods Creek is considered “pretty benign,” but was surging due to heavy amounts of snow and rain from the previous night, according to Campbell River SAR President Paul Berry.

Close to 35 search and rescue members, along with RCMP and crews from the Campbell River and Oyster River fire departments took part in Sunday's search and Berry said swift water rescue teams from Comox and Campbell River were resuming the search Monday.

The father's body was recovered late Monday morning.

BC Coroner’s Service has taken over the investigation.

Castanet will release more information at the family’s request.
