CFSOS grants $440K

The Community Foundation of the South Okanagan has approved more than $440,000 in grants to 60 charities in the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen.

“Grants were approved for projects from addiction recovery, repairs and renovation on social housing, to senior wellness and environmental awareness, to name just a few, said Aaron McRann, foundation executive Director of the Community Foundation of the South Okanagan Similkameen.

McRann says they aim to support a broad cross section of community needs through the grants, including charities, which are often not a priority for many local funders.

“We approved multi‐year funding for two local charities which will allow them to focus on expanding their programs and services to the community for three years, rather than focusing on having to find funding year after year,” added McRann.

The CFSOS has now granted a total of $3 million to community organizations while building its endowment fund to $11 million.

“It’s important point to understand that about half of the $440,000 that we granted this year was pre‐designated by donors who have already determined who they want to support from their fund,” he said, adding the other half was distributed through the group’s annual grant process.

The number of applications is down from previous years, but the requests totalled more than $560,000, much higher than previous years.
