Nugget good as gold

Nugget the loveable pooch is on the mend.

Described as a '100-pound lap dog' the fawn-coloured mastiff mix sometimes wags her tail so hard, she injures herself.

The large, loveable hound came to the Vernon SPCA with two torn cruciate ligaments in her back legs, and thanks to the donations from the public and an Okanagan veterinarian, Nugget will soon be as good as gold.

Initially, it was expected to cost around $9,000 for the surgery and care for the dog, but when Marco Veenis with the Okanagan Veterinary Hospital heard about the pooches plight, he offered to do the work for $6,000.

“Today, Dr. Sara Watt and I performed surgery on both Nugget knees,” said Veenis Tuesday. “The surgeries went well and, barring complications, Nugget is expected to make a full recovery. She has found a lovely new permanent family and we plan to send her to her new home as soon as she is recovered enough from her surgery.”

The Vernon SPCA is also raising money for another loveable dog in need of surgery.

Mac is a friendly, bubbly border collie cross who needs surgery because one of his hip bones keeps popping out of its socket.

“Mac is just the sweetest thing you will ever meet,” said Chelsea Taylor, Vernon SPCA manager.

Mac's is two years old and his condition can be very painful.

The needed surgery will cost around $3,000, and so far $2,000 has been raised.

Donations for Mac and other pets in need of medical care can be made online.
