City plows past snow budget

The City of Penticton estimates it could be as much as 40 per cent over its snow clearing budget for 2017.

Public works manager Len Robson says they had already more-or-less plowed through their $350,000 annual budget by Dec. 8.

After late-December’s generous blast of snow, Robson expects them to be anywhere from $100,000 to $150,000 over the mark once payroll is finalized.

He said a typical eight-hour shift of snow clearing involving the full fleet costs about $16,000. But if the snow falls on a weekend, holiday or is deep enough to require a 12-hour shift that cost shoots up to $35,000 per day.

“It adds up really quick,” Robson said.

He said the city tries to set its budget using a combination of factors including an average of previous year’s spending, but says it can be “highly variable” from year to year, depending on if snow falls on the weekends or holidays like this year.
