Canada smokes Danes 8-0

Team Canada clinched top spot in Group A at the World Juniors, cruising to an 8-0 win over Team Denmark on Saturday.

Seven different skaters found the back of the net for the Canadians, who scored three times in the first period, twice in the second and three more times in the third.

Brett Howden had a pair of goals, and Kelowna Rockets captain Cal Foote finished the night with three assists.

Canada led 44-18 in shots and went 2-4 on the powerplay.

In putting up an eight-spot on the scoreboard, Canada has now outscored Denmark 36-4 in their past five meetings at the World Juniors.

This will be the first time Canada has won its group in the round-robin stage in three years, when Connor McDavid highlighted a Canadian team that won gold in Toronto.

Since then, Canada lost in the quarterfinals two years ago and, last year, lost in a shootout in the gold-medal game.

The standings in Group A and Group B will be finalized by the end of Sunday. Elimination games will begin on Jan. 2.
