Jail guard strike delayed

The union representing Kelowna’s jail guards will have to resubmit its official strike notice, after the BC Labour Relations Board ruled it was illegal.

Commissionaires BC asked the board to throw the notice out, because it was sent via email instead of fax.

CUPE Local 338, which represents the 17 Kelowna jail guards, issued the now-void strike notice on Monday afternoon, and had planned to hit the picket lines Friday morning.

The union said the ruling was nothing more than Commissionaires' attempt to "derail" the strike, and that it has every intention to issue a new notice.

For more on why a union representative calls the labour relations board challenge "unusual," as well as what it means for the guards' strike plans, check out the full story on Castanet's sister business news website, Okanagan Edge.
