Mete(r)ing out kindness

A local agency that helps the poor is to benefit from people's kindness, and their use of kindness meters in the downtown.

Vernon's mayor is to hand over a cheque for $1,798.68 to the Upper Room Mission next week, all that from loose coins dropped in the bright orange meters by members of the public over the past 12 months.

The meters were installed in Vernon's central core in 2016 in order to reduce panhandling.

They were also an attempt to reeducate the public by encouraging them to give to homeless charities rather than to beggars.

In 2016, the Salvation Army was given $1,863.82 from the kindness meters.
