Serwa hits the podium

Kelowna's Kelsey Serwa made a successful comeback from her third major knee operation.

Serwa captured a bronze medal in the opening women's World Cup ski cross race of the season Thursday in Val Thorens, France.

The 28-year-old veteran of the Canadian women's team missed most of last season after injuring her knee early in the season.

Serwa was seventh in qualifying Thursday, before finishing second in both the quarter-final and semi-final runs.

In the final, she finished behind Sandra Naeslund of Sweden and Heidi Zacher of Germany who won gold and silver respectively.

Serwa's teammates Brittany Phelan and Georgia Simmerling finished fourth and fifth.

The women will race again in Val Thorens Saturday before moving on to Arosa, Switzerland Sunday and Monday.
