A new place for all

It was the grand opening for the South Okanagan Immigrant and Community Services building in Penticton Thursday evening.

The new building will help SOICS provide immigrants, refugees and temporary foreign workers with a range of services that help them integrate in local communities.

“It means that now we have a lot more space and more flexibility to offer more services and help more immigrants, refugees, and temporary foreign workers settle in the South Okanagan,” said Tahira Saeed, program manager.

SOICS serves more than 1,500 clients annually throughout the South Okanagan-Similkameen.

“We are situated throughout British Columbia and they get in touch with us to see if they can take part in our language classes and get a little bit of help with paperwork because once they are here they have to start from scratch for all of their documents,” Saeed said.

According to the national multi-year immigration plan, Canada is expected to welcome nearly one million immigrants over the next three years.

The grand opening and ribbon-cutting festivities celebrated those who helped plan and complete the project.
