Fundraiser for hungry kids

Some Penticton children are going to school hungry Monday mornings, after not getting enough to eat at home on weekends.

The Rotary Club’s Starfish Pack program is holding a fundraiser Nov. 30 to support the hungry kids.

“So many Penticton kids are going hungry on the weekends and we can’t possibly help them all, yet,” said Tracy Van Raes, Starfish Pack chair and rotarian. “Which is why we are doing all these fundraisers.”

The fundraiser will take place at the Barley Mill Brew Pub & Bistro, where a $20 ticket will get a roast beef dinner and live entertainment, with 100 per cent of the ticket going towards Starfish Pack.

In September the program was filling 10 backpacks a week with food for kids and have since added six more.

The program fills a backpack with food on Friday and sends it home with a child and their families on the weekends.

On Monday, the child returns to school with the empty pack, so it can be refilled for the next weekend.

Their goal is to expand into more elementary schools in the area, with help from the community.

Tickets for the event are available until Nov. 27 at the Barley Mill Brew Pub & Bistro or message the Penticton Starfish Pack Facebook page.
