Flooding on Van. Island

Heavy rains have caused flooding on Vancouver Island.

French Creek breached its banks on Sunday, and more rain is on the way.

The floodwaters surged through sandbags between Parksville and Qualicum Beach, flooding homes.

"It wasn't long before it was just gushing through here, punched a hole through there and out the other side," Carolyn Souci told CTV.

The water has receded, but Kelly Thomas says her basement suite was flooded with about 30 centimetres of water.

The Regional District of Nanaimo is giving out sandbags, and in Duncan, Cowichan Bay Road was closed because of flooding. High streamflow advisories are also in place from North Cowichan to the Comox Valley.

Melting snow and heavy rain is expected to create more problems through the weekend.
