Hazmat spill in Kaleden

The Kaleden Fire Department was called to assist in the clean up of a hazardous material spill Tuesday morning.

The spill was reported around 3:20 a.m. at the rest stop viewpoint about five kilometres south of Penticton on Highway 97.

“We responded to assist,” said Kaleden Fire Chief Denis Gaudry. “The chemical side of it was dealt with by Ministry of Environment, they used a contractor to clean it up.”

A provincial environmental emergency response officer attended the scene to monitor the spill as it was cleaned up, according to the incident report.

The substance spilled is only being described at as "caustic." The cause of it is unknown. 

The chemical has been cleaned up and moved to a safe disposal facility. Public risk has been eliminated.
