Former Viper bites snakes

Powered by a hat trick from former Vernon Vipers' forward Ryan Brushett, the Surrey Eagles earned a 5-4 road win in Vernon on Saturday night.

The Vipers carried a 2-0 lead after the first period and led 3-1 at the game's midway mark, but the Eagles clawed their way back, beginning with a pair of powerplay goals late in the second period.

Vernon regained its lead in the first two minutes of the third, before Brushett scored his second and third goals of the night in the final 10 minutes.

The game-winner came with just over a minute left in regulation.

Sol Seibel and Adam Panacci each scored the first goal of their respective B.C. Hockey League careers for the Vipers, while Michael Ufberg and Jimmy Lambert found the back of the net as well.

Ty Taylor suffered his first loss of the season in his ninth game, stopping 12 of 17 shots.

Vernon out shot Surrey 35-17 on the night, including 15-4 in the opening period.

The Vipers were hampered by allowing three powerplay goals on six attempts for the visitors.

Eagles goalie Nic Tallarico, who began the season with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks before being released by the team last week, earned the win on Saturday night with 31 saves.

The Vipers will jump on the bus tomorrow to face the Trail Smoke Eaters at the Cominco Arena for a 3 p.m. puck drop.
