The taste of friendship

I'm catching up with a girlfriend in Calgary this weekend and one of the things I always enjoy is the food and drink we share.

It's just another part of the magic of friendship, that you can trust someone else’s taste in broadening your horizons. 

Friends can share in spectacular adventures. My goddaughter and her best friend are currently on a whirlwind trip through the Caribbean, sampling all kinds of seafood and cocktails (not seafood cocktail. They are in their 20s, so they want more excitement. Sometimes though, it’s enough to share a simple meal.

My friend in Calgary loves breakfast, just as I do. Over the years we have shared delicious pastries, pancakes and egg dishes. But my favourite thing is still to have cereal at her house.

She showed me how to really get the most out of my breakfast bowl. If you have never tried combining different cereals and tossing in a few creative ingredients on top, you haven't truly lived.

The custom of sharing a drink has long been a social tradition in most cultures. Whether it's tea or coffee, beer or wine, or even a soda at a movie, friends have consumed beverages together for centuries.

This weekend, I'll be enjoying a new twist on the theme when I participate in my girlfriend’s Paint & Sip”workshop.

She is an artist, so she will be showing us how to do our own painting as we relax with a glass of wine to help allay our fears of messing up. I will get to try a new wine, and see if I can paint my way out of my own uncertainty as an at student.

In my world, the best way to end a great day is with dessert. I once went on a “dessert crawl” with another girlfriend in London years ago, and it remains a favourite memory.

I always been a fan of fruit crisp, and so is my girlfriend in Calgary. We have made many variations together, sharing ideas for new spice and fruit combinations. A great discovery for me was adding bananas. I love the tropical twist they add, and I never would have thought of them if it hadn't been for my friend.

I'm sure this weekend will provide me with another delicious adventure. I can't wait to share more stories and a recipe or two.
