Narrow miss in windstorm

A Vernon area woman had a narrow miss Tuesday afternoon when a large branch from a tree in Justice Park snapped off and fell onto 27th Street, right in front of the courthouse.

The woman was just getting into her car during a blustery windstorm when she heard the cracking of the branch.

“I was very frightened,” said the woman who did not give her name.

The massive tree branch brushed her leg but she was not injured. It also fell onto an SUV heading southbound on 27th, causing some damage to the roof.

Vernon Fire Rescue arrived on scene to block traffic and pedestrians, allowing single lane traffic in the northbound lanes.

A resident also reported a tree down at 34th Avenue and 34th Street.

Meanwhile, Coldstream and BX/Swan Lake firefighters were called out around 1:30 p.m. to downed power lines.
