Blood on the walls, ceiling

An RCMP blood stain analyst painted a gruesome picture of Warren Welters' bedroom in court Tuesday, describing blood spatter on the walls and ceiling around Welters' lifeless body.

The second-degree murder trial of 65-year-old Daniel Ruff, Welter's roommate, continued in Kelowna Supreme Court with Sgt. Alison Cameron describing the bloody murder scene.

The Crown has alleged that Ruff struck 51-year-old Welters in the back of the head with a hammer on June 14, 2015, as Welters lay passed out on his bed.

Upon arriving at the crime scene, Cameron found Welters lying face down, blood pooling around his face.

Additionally, Cameron found hundreds of blood spatter stains on the bedroom walls and on the ceiling above Welters, along with a large blood stain on a curtain near the bed.

Cameron noted the smaller blood spatter found throughout the room was indicative of a higher degree of force.

Outside the bedroom, Cameron found swiping blood stains on the bathroom door, indicative of movement.

Further away from the murder scene, she also found three parallel swiping blood stains near the top of the staircase, leading down.

Cameron also described a red golf shirt she analyzed, which had at least 90 blood spatter stains on the front and 14 more on the back of the right sleeve.

Cameron said the stains on the shirt would be consistent with the person who delivered the fatal blows.

The trial is expected to continue through next week.
