Reid's Corner chaos

Alanna Kelly

One of the busiest intersections in Kelowna is causing headaches for commuters.

The Reid’s Corner intersection of Highway 97 and Sexsmith and Old Vernon roads sees the worst amount of congestion during the morning and evening rush hours.

One worker in the area said construction is making it difficult to get to work every day, and there are constant changes to where drivers can turn.

The project is part of the six-laning of Highway 97 from Highway 33 to Edwards Road.

A Castanet reader said he was disturbed by a weekend incident in which a fire truck was delayed by the road closures.

“A fire truck responding Code 3 up Rutland Road turned left onto old Vernon Road,” said Steve Wraith. “After doing so, they realized that the highway is blocked and they could not get through.”

Wraith said delays in emergency response times could be devastating.

Contractor Emil Anderson Construction has announced multiple road closures in the area.

Over the weekend, there was no entry to Highway 97 from Old Vernon Road. And this weekend, there will not be access onto Highway 97 from Sexsmith.

There are also no left turns allowed from Highway 97 onto Sexsmith or Old Vernon.

More signs were put up on Tuesday to direct drivers, and construction workers on site said they expect everything to be finished by Monday – but that will all depend on weather.
