Old bomb in the bushes

It's not everyday you trim your bushes and find what appears to be a bomb, but that’s just what happened for a Naramata couple on Monday.

At about 3:30 p.m Irena Horzelenberg was trimming her shrubs when she opened them up to take a look at the roots, finding what looked like an old mortar round, according to husband Nick Horzelenberg.

"When she opened it up, she found this mortar round," he said. "It’s about five feet away from my front door."

"She immediately called me and we determined that, yes in fact it was a mortar round and my neighbour, who is a former military member also confirmed it."

The RCMP bomb squad is on its way to Naramata to deal with the device and are expected to arrive around 11 p.m.

The device has to be treated as if it's active, until determined otherwise, according to Horzelenberg. A Penticton RCMP member will remain on scene until the object is removed.

"It has no wires anywhere near it, it may have been there for some time we don’t know," Horzelenberg said. "It looks to me as if it’s possibly a World War II vintage."
