Rams RCMP cruiser, flees

A distraught man rammed a police vehicle and took off, Sunday, in Kelowna.

Kelowna and Lake Country RCMP responded to reports of a distraught man causing a disturbance outside his home on Beaver Lake Road. Neighbours reported hearing the man yelling, screaming and acting erratically.

“Officers arrived on the scene and immediately began efforts to de-escalate the situation,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

The man retreated to his vehicle and then rammed one of the police cruisers twice before fleeing, O’Donaghey added.

Unmarked police cars and a police helicopter followed his movements, and the 66-year-old was taken into custody under the Mental Health Act without further incident once he returned home.

The man was taken to hospital for a medical assessment and faces potential charges, said O’Donaghey.

A Lake Country officer is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries after his cruiser was rammed.
