Summer smoke choked film

The smoke that lingered in the Okanagan through the summer appears to have driven away filmmakers.

Penticton Mayor Andrew Jakubeit, who is the chair of the Okanagan Film Commission, said six major projects in the region were lost due to smoky skies.

"Three international company commercials, two TV series episodes and a film feature relocated because of the smoke and tight timelines to meet production deadlines," Jakubeit said.

He added that The X-Files was likely the most high-profile production that chose to film elsewhere.

Despite the summer setbacks, Jakubeit said he believes filming to date this year is up from recent years.

He teased information at the Regional District Okanagan-Similkameen board meeting on Thursday about productions that are expected to soon visit.

We still have a good fall and winter season coming, and for 2018 a bunch of big projects lined up, including a couple in (Penticton) that are very prominent."
