Langford wants Amazon HQ

A Vancouver Island city is trying to catch a big fish in the tech sector.

Langford Mayor Stew Young said he has made a bid for Amazon to build their new North American headquarters in the Greater Victoria city.

Young said that Langford can tick off a lot of boxes that other applicant cities cannot.

"All these other cities are going to be applying for it but maybe because we're affordable, because we have recreation, because the lifestyle is good and the weather is great," he said.

Other applicant cities include New York City, Washington and Toronto, and experts believe it's a long shot that the retail giant chooses Langford.

"Our region hires 20,000 people. To add another 50,000 highly skilled workers, I think it would be a daunting task," Tim The said, co-founder and CEO of Kano/Apps in Victoria.

Young added that he would be willing to rename a section of Leigh Road to Amazon Way if the tech company comes to town.

Amazon is accepting headquarter bids until Oct. 19.
