A-mazing event needs help

One of the most spooktacular events in the North Okanagan is looking for volunteers.

Historic O’Keefe Ranch is looking for volunteers to help with its popular haunted corn maze.

Ominously, Field of Screams opens on Friday, Oct. 13.

The event is the largest fundraiser of the year for the ranch, and it helps support the care and maintenance of numerous historical buildings, thousands of artifacts and provides education to the public and a unique cultural experience for thousands visitors.

Field of Screams has grown in size and popularity over the past five years, and the event relies heavily on volunteers.

In 2016, there were about 80 crew on site each night. This year there are 11 nights of production, and there is a need for more volunteers.

“The ranch logs an astounding number of volunteer hours every year. We simply could not operate without volunteers,” said general manager Glen Taylor.

While all in fun, the maze was marred last year by the actions of an individual who attacked one of the volunteers, injuring her hand. Taylor said the ranch will have extra security in place this year as well as security cameras set up throughout the maze.

Volunteers are needed as actors, for set design and construction, maze spotters, front gate attendants and a concession crew.

Field of Screams runsOct. 13, 14, 18-21, and 24-28.
