Surf's up, best compete

Madison Erhardt

Surf's up in Kelowna.

The 2017 World Wake Surfing Championship got underway at City Park, Thursday.

"This is all the people (who) have qualified from around the world. There are roughly 20 stops on all five continents, and everyone is here to compete for the title of world champion," said spokesman Phil Wilson.

Competitor Elily Anderson spends her winters in Calgary and enjoys summers in Kelowna, spending the majority of her time on the water.

"It's really nice to have worlds here and be on home soil. To be able to be in your own water is awesome," she said.

Although it wasn't typical September weather in the Okanagan, the cold temperatures didn't seem to stop her.

"I don't think it was that cold. It was nice, the water is flat. The weather conditions are really great today," Anderson said.

The event spans three days, wrapping up Saturday. Surfers and non-surfers alike are welcome to watch the action from the park.
