1 bag challenge, Vernon!

Vernon's Salvation Army has issued a one bag challenge to businesses and individuals who want to help the local food bank and feed local families who need support.

“Right across the country, this is Food Hunger Awareness week,” said Lt. Stefan Reid, head of the House of Hope at 3303 32nd Avenue. “We're issuing the one bag challenge this week for businesses, corporations, individuals to bring in one bag and then challenge five people.

“Then we'll stock our shelves and will be able to give more choices for what food goes in what hampers.”

One in three people in Canada don't know where their next meal is coming from, according to Reid.

It has been extremely busy for the Salvation Army “this summer with the wildfires, with the increase in hampers that we're distributing, already we've given out just about 5,000 hampers, and we're still going into our busy season.”

Reid is asking the community to come out and support the food bank.

“Any support would be greatly appreciated.”

Reid said staff have noticed an increase in young families approaching the Salvation Army for food help.

He said the hampers are issued only once every two months and don't go out the door without staff asking the recipients in-depth financial questions.

“We'll always help out but also we are working with clients, with famlies to help them understand their spending so they don't need to rely on a food box.”
