Slocan grow ops busted

It’s harvest season in the Slocan Valley – and police are on the watch.

RCMP took down two marijuana grow ops in the region last week. The valley, west of Nelson, is a rural area long known for its pot production.

On Sept. 12, police raided a property near Winlaw, and found more than 400 “very large” marijuana plants. They also found buds and various pot products. One woman was arrested at the site, and faces charges under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Three days later, police caught two men harvesting about 150 marijuana plants on Crown land near Crescent Valley. Both men were released from custody and will appear in court later.

“The production and possession of marijuana is still illegal in Canada," RCMP said in a press release.

The federal government plans to legalize the drug next July, though production will likely still be highly regulated.
