Cutting desks out of class

Reports of children being taught while sitting on the floor at Rutland Senior Secondary school seem to be true, but it’s likely not what you expect.

Justin Schneider, communications advisor for Central Okanagan Public Schools said classrooms are getting away from the traditional style of teaching.

“A lot of classrooms are getting away from having desks in rows,” he said. “They are doing things like white boards and tables so students can sit and collaborate at them and move them around and change the space around them.”

Allowing students to work in more collaborative spaces is part of the new curriculum, according to Schneider.

Schools across the district are bringing in new ways of thinking into the classroom, not just at Rutland Senior Seconday School.

Schneider called it "innovative learning" and that desks can be counter productive.
