Vees rout Silverbacks

The Penticton Vees scored five times in the first period to pace them to a 6-2 road win over the Salmon Arm Silverbacks, Friday night at the Shaw Centre.

For the second straight game, co-captain Owen Sillinger opened the scoring early, scoring 2:06 into the opening period. He would score his second to double the Vees' lead 6:05 later.

Defender Joe Leahy scored the Vees' first of three power play goals on the night at 11:56 of the first.

Ryan Sandelin scored his first BCHL goal on the power play at 18:40 of the first, extending the visitors' lead to 4-0. Just seven seconds later, Lukas SIllinger buried to put the Vees up by five.

The Silverbacks responded with a pair of goals in the second period. Josh Latta got the home team on the board at 4:28, and Akito Hirose scored a power play marker at 14:30.

That would be as close the Backs would come on the scoreboard, however.

The Vees would secure the 6-2 victory with a power play from Jared Nash, coming with 16 seconds left to play in the third period.

Goalie Adam Scheel, playing in his first career BCHL game, earned the win 30 saves on 32 shots.

The win puts the Vees at 2-0 to start the season, while the Silverbacks fall to 0-3.

Penticton plays next on Sept. 22 against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs at the league's showcase tournament, at Prospera Centre in Chilliwack.

Salmon Arm is in action again on Saturday night, as they host the Trail Smoke Eaters.
