Pallet blaze suspicious

UPDATE: 4:10 p.m.

Kelowna RCMP say a pallet fire early Thursday was suspicious.

Cpl. Tania Carroll says the fire spread to an adjacent residential building, but all residents were evacuated without injury, and firefighters extinguished the flames quickly.

The extent of damage to the building is still being assessed.

A man on a bicycle was seen in the area before the fire, and police are interested in speaking with him.

Anyone with information is asked to call Const. Steve McBride at 250-762-3300 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

ORIGINAL: 6 a.m.

Fire erupted in a stack of pallets dangerously close to homes overnight.

The blaze started about 4 a.m. in the parking lot behind Mediterranean Market, near the corner of Lawrence Avenue and Gordon Drive, at the north end of Kelowna's downtown district.

Firefighters doused the flames, and the residents of a home just feet from the fence line got out safely, witnesses report.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, nor if there was any damage to the home.
