Eclipse viewing party

Hundreds of people made their way to the Kelowna Curling Club to view Monday's solar eclipse.

A lineup that started at the club stretched all the way down Richter Street as people eager to view the celestial event waited to catch a glimpse through safety glasses and telescopes.

"Today is a special day with the total eclipse in Oregon. Kelowna will have an 83 per cent eclipse. It's very uncommon to have this much of the sun covered at this location," said Andrew Bennett, a member of the Kelowna Astronomy Club.

Bennett says it was a once-in-a lifetime opportunity.

"It's something like 325 years for a total eclipse to appear in one spot. We are fortunate to get an eclipse viewing today. It's a beautiful day for science," he said.

Volunteer Penny Nile couldn't believe how many people showed up to get a glimpse.

"The turnout is just great, it is crazy. We were not expecting this," she said.
