Fencing to make Coq safer

New wildlife fencing will make driving the Coquihalla a little safer.

Ten kilometres of fencing will go up this fall along the Coquihalla Highway south of Merritt to help prevent wildlife collisions.

It will extend from the Kane Valley overpass to Rusty Pitt, 22 km south of Merritt. It will add to the 160 km of fencing already along the highway.

The exclusion fencing steers wildlife to underpasses, allowing for the safe movement of animals under the highway.

There is approximately 500 km of wildlife fencing across B.C.

Two new wildlife-detection systems are also being tested on Highway 3, near Elko and Sparwood.

Flashing warning signs alert drivers when a large animal approaches the roadway, allowing the driver to slow down and avoid a collision.

The locations were chosen due to a high concentration of elk and deer in the area.
