Door-to-door scams

There has been a wave of door-to-door scams in the Central Okanagan and seniors have often been the victims, police say.

The RCMP have received information from complainants, reporting that an adult male has been going to residences, soliciting cash to pay for the services of a tow truck.

“Often the man claims to be a neighbour of the scam victim, that he has broken his door key in the lock of his vehicle and has found himself short an amount of money needed to pay for the tow truck,” said Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey, RCMP spokesperson. “The suspect typically promises to pay the victim back, however he never returns.”

Another door-to-door scam currently making the rounds is when a victim is pressured into or convinced to purchase a service they neither want or necessarily need.

The scam often involves the victim being presented with an unreasonable and overpriced amount for a simple service, police warned.

“RCMP would also like to caution the public on the potential for being scammed when deciding to purchase items, such as electronics from unknown individuals in parking lots or other public locations," said O'Donaghey. "Often times the items being sold are overpriced, and the buyer can feel pressured to buy quickly as supply is limited.”

RCMP recommend the public do their due diligence and research a purchase before buying.
