Kelowna's Kierra Smith finished sixth today in the final of the women's 100 metre breaststroke at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Swimming out of lane one, Smith clocked a time of one minute, 6.90 seconds. That was almost three-tenths of a second slower than her semi-final time.
Smith was fifth at the 50 metre turn, just two-one hundredths of a second behind a Chinese swimmer, and head of world record holder Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania.
However, she was unable to hang on over the last 50.
American Lilly King shaved 22-one hundredths of a second off Meilutyte's world record time to capture the gold medal.
Smith will compete in the 200 metre breaststroke beginning Thursday.

Kelowna's Kierra Smith will swim for a medal later this morning at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Smith will compete in the women's 100 metre breaststroke final.
The local swimmer finished in a tie for sixth with Spain's Jessica Vall in her semi-final heat.
She finished in a time of one minute, 6.62 seconds.
Yuliya Efimova of Russia was the fastest of the semi-final qualifiers, finishing in one minute, 4.36 seconds.
Earlier in the week, Smith was the last swimmer to qualify out of the heats, covering the 100 metres in 1:07.43.
Smith is also scheduled to swim in the 200 metre breaststroke Thursday.
