Robbery driver sentenced

A former employee of the Mac's convenience store in Lumby has been handed an 18-month conditional sentence for his part in an armed robbery there on Apr. 24, 2016. The sentence will be served in the community as a house arrest.

Keegan Reed, 22, of Lumby pleaded guilty to robbery and accessory after the fact in connection with the incident in which a young female clerk was held at knifepoint and ordered to empty the cash register and safe. Cigarettes and lottery tickets were also stolen.

Reed was the driver of the vehicle that carried Thomas Antoine Belanger who, last February, was sentenced to 37 months in prison for robbery and unlawful confinement.

During Belanger's trial, the court was told Reed had worked at the Mac store, knew its layout and drove to the store where Belanger committed the robbery.

The two split the money after they left the scene, court was told.

“I appreciate you accept responsibilty,” said provincial court Judge Mayland McKimm during sentencing Monday. “(But) you failed to walk away.”

Reed's conditional sentence includes:

  • 60-day curfew when he cannot leave his residence between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., except for work
  • no consumption of alcohol or drugs for the whole 18 months
  • staying away from the clerk who was traumatized by the events
  • serving 30 hours community service
  • no weapons or imitation weapons for three years
  • pay $420 restitution to the Mac's store

Following the sentence, Reed will be put on 24 months probation.

Charges of unlawful confinement and uttering threats have been stayed by the Crown.
