Teens trashing Queen's Park

The Okanagan Skaha School Board is struggling to clean up a constant mess left behind at Queen’s Park Elementary.

Debbie Wipf says her daughter has been attending summer camp for the past two weeks at Queen's Park, and in that time, the school grounds have been a dangerous mess.

"It's pretty disgusting and embarrassing, right across the street from the community centre and hockey school," she said. "It's not nice for the parents of the kids. And if I was a tourist I wouldn't want to see that."

Broken glass is scattered all over the playground, basketball court and near doorways.

None of the garbage cans are being emptied, claims Wipf. She has also picked up and thrown out needles and condoms.

The concerned mother had to call the RCMP on Thursday, when she spotted a group of teens loitering at the back of the school, including one who was lying on the ground and not moving.

Emergency crews were dispatched for an over intoxicated 13-year-old.

Doug Gorcak, director of facilities for SD67, admitted they are having a challenge at Queen's Park with people congregating at night.

"That group is breaking bottles and leaving garbage, even urinating in building corners," he said. "Although the public may be thinking we are not doing anything, we are down there a couple of days a week."

"It's a bit of a struggle right now, we are trying to stay on top of it, but we have reduced staff in the summer."

He added they are hoping to bring in additional security for the property.
